Biography

Award winning artist Sarah Gwyer was born in Gloucestershire in 1985 and now lives and works in the Cotswolds. Primarily using stitch her practice draws together influences from pop artists Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist through to contemporary artists Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst.

After studying Fine Art in Cardiff, Gwyer headed straight to London to study a Masters in Printmaking at the University of the Arts, London. Having always been a bit of a Magpie she started stitching beads on to her prints and soon the stitched elements took over. By the time of her graduate show she was exhibiting simultaneously in London and New York.

Gwyer's work reflects on the themes of celebrity, consumerism and commercialism, using well known faces and pop imagery. She pushes embroidery to new audiences ensuring textile art is appreciated as the fine art form it is.

“Textiles is a particularly therapeutic artform, 10,000s of miniature stabs is the perfect way to sum up the frustration of millions caused by the few. The world is not as divided as the media would like us to believe; society is frayed certainly but it can be held together by just a few strong threads. Recent works have been pushing back at celebrity in particular, the silence of many on current events isn’t surprising but is so disappointing. I hope my work encourages others to pick up a sewing needle and see where it takes them.”

Sarah is based in The Cotswolds in the U.K. For business inquiries, please feel free to contact her.
